OSCAR COOPER
Infamous 2 'Second Son' Playstation 4 Releases date 21st March
Infamous was an ambitious project back in 2011, essentiality a super hero game with a lot of player choice and a sprawling open city to smash to bits. It was one of the few titles I envied being on the PS3 only and the first game I bought when buying the system. So Sony are banking on the sequel (a PS4 exclusive) being the system seller for their next generation console. That's one hell of a task and Titanfall over on the Xbox One side has only just managed it and that's a huge mulitplayer first person shooter, but lets see how things work out as its early days. The look of the game has come up against some bad press online, I am personally very impressed with the visuals, Sucker Punch have done a good job keeping the feel of the original and also mapping out a beautiful recreation of Seattle for you go crazy in. You play as Delsin Rowe and it takes place seven years after the previous story ended. I like the character, he is young, funny and having a tough time getting used to his new found abilities. Your powers are the games selling point, absolutely stunning in effect as you fly, fire and levitate cars, people and street furniture . Its a great romp and features both good and evil paths for the protagonist, strong story and detailed characters, but its just not the revolution we were all expecting from Sony 4/5
Elder Scrolls Online Mac, PC Release date 4th April
The Edler scrolls series is probably one of the most famous role playing game franchises in PC gaming history, going back as far as 1994 can you believe. The name has a great reputation in the industry for making brilliant adventure games with rich story and character dialogue, Skyrim (2011) on the Xbox 360 and PS3 won countless awards and is a game that I confess to still playing three years later. But none of these titles have ever been online multiplayer's, so this release is new territory for Bethesda and the series. The good news is, it works from a functional point of view, no server problems, bugs or glitches (so far), which is often the case with a huge online universe like this. The setting and time line from the previous games also fits well with the format. Its hard to review such a large amount of content with a massively multiplayer online role-playing video game like this, it can take months to get to know whether it works as full blown product. But from what I am experiencing currently feels solid and detailed, environments are varied, enemies are well pitched at your current rank and working as a team is a lot of fun. Having a decent PC however is pretty much essential, the visuals need power to allow themselves to fully bloom and frame rates slowing down when in a big team can also be avoided. Overall I am pleased with how this is looking and my initial scepticism has been quashed with plenty of hours killing monsters and exploring deep dungeons with friends 5/5
Castlevania 2 Lords of Shadow, Playstation 3 Xbox 360, PC Release date 25/2/2014
The Castlevania series needs no introduction, Symphony Of The Night first sucked the life from our consoles back in 1997 and is still widely regarded by critics as one of the best games ever made. Mercurysteam, the developers given the huge task of making a modern sequel to the much loved classic series released 'Castlevania Lords Of Shadow' in 2010. It was a brilliant take on a classic franchise, It sees you playing as a powerful vampire, Gabriel Belmont. Featuring adrenaline inducing third person 3D combat and the classic whip weapon from previous titles, it also came with other new additions to his arsenal like magic and upgrades. It was a worthy successor, Mercurysteam had proved they could deliver the goods, everything was great, until I clapped eyes on the sequel. The game-play is precisely the same as its predecessor which is not such a bad thing, but the map layout and mechanics elsewhere in the game let this sequel down. An open world environment has been introduced resulting in a lot of back tracking and an unwelcome stealth mode added. These additions don't suit the play style for a game that is essentially a hack'n'slash adventure, so its points lost there unfortunately. Plus points are however great boss battles, a brilliant soundtrack by the welcomed return of Oscar Araujo and some stunning white knuckle fighting, as the combat has not been messed around with too much, if it isn't broken, don't fix it! Is my motto here 3/5
Darksouls 2 Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC Release date 11/3/2014
Darksouls 2 is technically the third title in the series created by From Software, which started with the Playstation 3 exclusive Demon Souls in 2010. It was well received but didn't make a huge noise with critic's. Darksouls its spiritual successor made much more of a bang, partly as it was released on both platforms, but mainly because its still regarded by millions as a generation defining action RPG. It stands as a true modern classic and not only is it one of the hardest games I have ever played, it's also one of the most rewarding. From Software had an absolute mountain to climb in order to produce something to equal this masterpiece and to a certain extent they have. Darksouls 2 is huge and still as murderously difficult as it should be, 'Prepare to die" is the games mantra and this rings true throughout. Releasing this game on 7th generation systems is a bold move, it may be my lavished eye balls that have become used to staring at Xbox One visuals, but I couldn't help notice the graphics have taken a bit of a hit. This may be due to the frame-rate complaints from the original Darksouls or the size of the world being greatly increased, there could be a trade off here. Closing comments are, From Software you have done it again, another torturous classic is born and the 7th generation systems couldn't have had a better send off. Tears of frustration, pain and joy, here I come. 5/5
Titanfall Xbox One Releases date 11/3/2014
Respawn Entertainment are multi-player first person shooter geniuses, members of this studio were on the team for the massively popular online phenomenon that was 'Call Of Duty 4'. Their template for kill streak rewards and upgrades is still used nearly seven years later for the current new releases from the franchise, bringing us to Titanfall's unique selling point. Its nothing like Call of Duty, in actual fact, I have had more fun with Titanfall in the last two weeks than with all the sequels to Call Of Duty 4. It's a fresh take on the genre, allowing the player new found freedom of movement in the form of double jumps and 'free running' style wall climbs, it puts a whole new twist on just marching around with a gun. The 'pilots' as they are called, also have a range of special moves including stealth camouflage and anti-titan weaponry. Yes! There are titans, giant hulking mechanical machines straddling the battle field with huge cannons, stomping on the tiny pilots, punching other titans and generally being totally awesome. You win your own titan by getting a set number of kills, this turns the game on its head as you are no longer a nimble soldier but a slow moving heavily armoured tank with legs. To witness titan vs titan battles in game as a bystander is a hands down stunning spectacle, the developers have utilised all the Xbox One's graphical might, my jaw dropped as I stared at the particle physics and fire effects all in full swing. We don't need a single player campaign when things are this good. Just like Halo back in the day, this could be a system seller, only time and the online community will tell. 5/5
Tomb Raider Definitive Edition
Release date January 28th
PS4,XBO
If you are like me and have a special place in your heart for the Tomb Raider series then this is the game for you. Lara Croft has had a bit of an identity crisis in past years, she has gone through countless image changes and revamps. To be honest this new look character model and development studio seemed like too little too late, but that was until I played it. Even on the Xbox 360 and PS3 this game looks fantastic, strong story, great stealth mechanics and gunplay won got it countless game of the year nominations in 2013. This games truly deserves the Tomb Raider stamp of quality, the fact that it's had even more of cosmetic makeover for the PS4 and XBOX One consoles means this is a no brainer purchase for all next generation systems. 4/5
Broken Age Act I
Release date January 28th
Win, Mac, Lin, iOS, Droid, Ouya
Born on Kick starter, Broken Age is a game demanded by the fans of the famous writer and developer Tim Schafer to come out of the wood work. Tim has a legacy of brilliant point and click adventure titles behind him including the classics 'The Secret of Monkey Island' and 'Grim Fandango'. These games got me into the industry way back in 1988, so I have a vested interest in anything Tim works on. In a world of fast paced first person shooters and hectic online competitive arenas there seems little room for a story rich point and click adventure. But this title is a welcome break in a long forgotten genre. Beautiful artwork coupled with that trade mark Schafer humor all set in adorable universe. Broken Age is a perfect game for a tablet and all the family. It is a fantastic way to spend a quiet afternoon on the sofa, a truly stunning game in both style and story, I cant wait to see more from Tim. 5/5
The Wolf Among Us - Episode 2: Smoke and Mirrors
Release date February 8th
Win, Mac, PSNXBLATell
Tell Tale games studio have had a great couple of years, working with The Walking Dead franchise (Episode 1 is free in the App store) they’ve had blinding success, winning awards and worldwide recognition. They make great text driven and story based titles, allowing the player to make key game changing decisions and The Wolf Among Us is no exception. Based loosely on fairy tales and fables it has a modern twist detective story attached, its fun but not to the depth of its previous titles. Like the Walking Dead games it comes in episodic format leaving you with only a quarter of a larger story, which is a great idea but not executed as well as other titles. This game is not full price remember and is available as a digital download on XBLA, so if you are a fan of the previous formats, its worth a look but not as strong as the last episode. 3/5
